I just saw The Amazing Spider-Man and I spent the whole movie playing my favorite game: Guess the Film Score Composer. After more than a few hints of Casper and several other trademark motifs (use of a wordless chorus, “clanging” sounds at climactic moments), I correctly guessed James Horner! I was surprised, since he hasn’t done much lately and this doesn’t seem like the kind of movie he’d score (movies by either James Cameron or Ron Howard seem to be his bread-and-butter lately).
Even though Horner tends to recycle a lot of his themes and instrumentation, I still love most of what he comes out with (I mean, Titanic, Braveheart, Legends of the Fall, Apollo 13…need I say more?). Spider-man’s score was fairly cliche, but it still had some good moments.
Oh, and I thought the movie itself was very good! I love Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone. I had a mild obsession with Spider-Man 2 back when it came out, so I was a little wary of a reboot, but I think they did a great job establishing its own new voice. This post, however, offers some food for thought (spoilers!).
